電車の中で出会った小さな「ありがとう」
A Small “Thank You” Encounter on the Train

会社に向かうため、最寄りの駅から電車に乗り込みました。
出入り口近くの一番端の席に座り、携帯電話で電子書籍を読んでいました。定刻になると扉が閉まり、電車がゆっくりと動き出します。

I boarded the train at my nearest station to head to work. I took a seat at the far end near the entrance and started reading an e-book on my phone.
As the scheduled time arrived, the doors closed, and the train began to move slowly.

しばらくして、途中の駅に到着。扉が開くと、若いお母さんと2歳くらいの女の子が乗ってきました。
お母さんは金髪に三つ編み、エクステ、そしてピアスがたくさんついていて、派手な印象。
でも、その隣にいる娘さんは対照的に、普通のかわいらしい女の子でした。

After a while, the train arrived at a station. As the doors opened, a young mother and her two-year-old daughter got on.
The mother had blonde hair in braids, extensions, and many piercings, giving a flashy impression. In contrast, her daughter looked like a typical, adorable little girl.

私は、席を譲ろうと立ち上がりました。
でも、その前にお母さんが笑顔で「この子は立って遊びたいようなので。ありがとうございます」と声をかけてくれたのです。
私はチラッと女の子を見て、お母さんの言葉通り元気に立っているのを確認し、そのまま席に座り直しました。

I stood up to offer my seat.
However, before I could say anything, the mother smiled and said, “She wants to stand and play, so it’s okay. Thank you.”
I glanced at the little girl and saw that, just as her mother had said, she was happily standing.
So, I sat back down.

その後、私のすぐ近くで、お母さんと娘さんが楽しそうにおしゃべりをしていました。
何を話していたのかはわかりません。でも、明るく弾む声を聞いているうちに、私まで自然と笑顔になって、また本を読み進めました。

After that, the mother and daughter continued chatting happily near me.
I couldn’t hear exactly what they were talking about, but their cheerful voices made me smile naturally.
I resumed reading my book.

電車が私の降りる駅に近づき、私は席を立ちました。
するとその瞬間、女の子が私の方を見て「ありがとう！」と元気な声で言ってくれたのです。

As the train approached my stop, I stood up.
At that very moment, the little girl looked at me and cheerfully said, “Thank you!”

思いがけない言葉に驚いてしまい、「どういたしまして」と小さな声で返すのが精一杯でした。
そして電車を降りたあとも、その「ありがとう」が頭の中に残り続けました。
改札に向かいながら、じわっと涙が出そうになったほどです。
でも、そんな心が温かくなるような言葉をもらったのに、自分は驚いてしまって小さな声でしか返せなかったことが、少し情けなく思えました。

Surprised by her unexpected words, I could only manage a quiet “You’re welcome.
” Even after getting off the train, her “Thank you” kept echoing in my mind.
As I walked toward the ticket gate, I felt tears welling up.
But at the same time, I felt a bit embarrassed that, despite receiving such a heartwarming thank you, I had only been able to respond in a small voice out of surprise.

堂々とお礼を言えた小さな女の子と、ちょっと戸惑ってしまった私。
でも、あの「ありがとう」は、きっとずっと心に残る大切な言葉になりそうです。

A little girl who confidently expressed her gratitude and me, who was caught off guard.
But that “Thank you” will surely remain in my heart as a precious memory.
